Is there a student Union at your school? Do the students not have a say in the way campus monies are handled? Referendum time?

Zola

We have a Student Association, but they don't have a say where campus renovations and construction is concerned...SA represents more like students living in dorms, Greeks...and though they represent the student body as a whole, their decisions don't really affect those who don't live/interact widely on campus.

And as you can see, Doc Foglesong doesn't really put a whole lot of stock into the opinion of most faculty, much less students.

Michelley-Shell

It's really a shame when there something aesthetic that has such a profound effect on the humanity of a place is being ousted by one single point of decision making. Doc Fogelsong is failing to see that te gardens are a huge part of life on campus. He's failing to see that even though there may be more immediate issues, like a decreased budget, those gardens are not merely dispensible. The man is being sickeningly naive in assuming that people are forgetting the other issues... he's not realising that this one is obviouly close to everyone's hearts. If he's ever seen war as a retired General, then he *must* know that even in toughest times, people prioritize art and beautification as a means of maintaining sanity. It should be no surprise that the student body which is often under a blanket of stress at all times, feels so strongly about the beauty and protection of its flowers. Anyways,  maybe it's time to have a rally!

Zola

Yes! And it's not that he's getting rid of the gardens and flower beds entirely--we still have sickly pansies in beds all over campus, but the daffodils themselves seem to be considered an eyesore by Dr. Foglesong simply because the very nature of daffodils is for their bulbs to reproduce asexually beneath the ground, and allow them to grow in little clusters instead of with the military precision that Doc seems to value very highly.

Michelley-Shell

Well if he wants a military campus, he should go be the president of a military college. Then he could even get the flowers to do push-ups...

Zola

I know, huh? :)

I'm new to the Foglesong saga...but after hearing about the daffodils and the subsequent squelching of facebook for MSU students, I have to wonder how much longer will this go on?  It's as if there is a Strategic Plan in progress to undermine the spirit of the university.  Recently, I heard that the crepe myrtles at Dudy Nobel were trimmed to mere shrubs, then pulled up...that a portable generator-powered floodlight system was brought in so that an independent contractor could replant flower beds in place of the beautiful crepe myrtles in time for the MSU Diamond Dawgs season opener.  Could this be true?  Someone say something, please.

Zola

The Facebook connectivity problems on campus were, I honestly believe, NOT due to any sort of censorship. That's just hype and overreaction...however, the crepe myrtles at Dudy Noble were cut down, though I can't attest to an independent contractor replanting the beds.

Said enough?

I suppose the mystery of the missing Reflectors was a coincidence and not related to the architecture students' comments?  I will not be surprised when I hear that the School of Architecture has budget cuts.  Who will be the next Foglesong daffodil?  Anyone who gets in his way, that's who!

I'm told the Dudy Noble emergency beautification is underway now.

Zola

Ah yes, the disappearance of the Reflectors slipped my mind. I will admit, that is exceptionally fishy, and if they were intentionally collected I would no doubt attribute it to the letter from the School of Architecture.

Forgive me that I don't immediately snap at every happenstance and immediately apply a conspiracy theory to it--I'm simply a realist who tries to look at things from various angles.

Aviscanticus: a sonnet

Presidents of colleges, and kings

Alike complain that those they rule above,

Despite their god-like vision in all things,

Do not reward their labors with their love.

And thus found Aviscanticus, the Proud,

A general who of counsel had no need,

A caesar who to wisdom never bowed,

A leader who had never learned to lead.

He snubbed the senate as irrelevant;

He silenced opposition with a frown;

He banned the art he found inelegant;

He ordered pipes and concrete painted brown.

And still he seemed to win the war of wills,

Until he dared to pluck the daffodils.

Zola

I WANT YOU TO BE MY FRIEND. NOW. That is, by far, the most succinct and appropriate commentary I've read yet. May I print this out to share with my roommate's professor, who's the head of the Faculty Senate?

Zola

Thank you! May I ask how you stumbled across my happy little blog? ;P

Jeremy

[this is good] Hi! I know this story is a little old, but I just read it after a few Air Force friends and I were laughing about the ridiculous things Combat Fogelsong had everybody do when he was still the Commander of the US Air Forces in Europe. Im sorry you guys had to deal with his micro-managing at MSU. I'm from AL and my wife is from MS, and I know how we like to keep our southern campuses clean and nice...but we leave it to actual experts, not self-righteous former generals. If anybody stumbles on this posting in the future, please know that Mr. Fogelsong does not represent the entire USAF. In fact, we couldn't stand him when he WAS still in the Air Force. Glad you guys got rid of him!

Zola

WOW--I had *no* idea he was like that in the Air Force as well. Well, we're certainly glad to be rid of him :) Thanks for your comment!

Jeremy

Zola,
I remember having to paint a fence - with WATER-BASED PAINT - in a rainstorm one day. When we asked if we could wait until after the rain in order to finish painting, we were told NO, we had to get it painted TODAY, cause Gen. Fogelsong wanted it painted.
That whole thing with "nothing in the windows" on campus? That was his whole rant on base wherever his command extended.
Remember your daffodil problem? Well, he complained in Germany and had a LOT of nice flowers planted along his favorite running trail......in NOVEMBER. People told him "Sir, you can't plant flowers in November." He had it done anyway. Two weeks later, all the plants died. This was his abuse of your taxpayer dollars....all because of his own ignorance and (more importantly) his ego.
How did this guy become president of anything???
Kudos to you all at State for putting up with it for two years. I finished my Master's Degree at the University of AL, so I'm completely familiar with campus life in the south. (I'm from AL, after all.)
Glad you're rid of him.
See you guys on the football field this year.... :) hee hee

Zola

Gads, what an idiot.
